Watch now Grand Designs Season10 episode 5 Episode 5
All episodes continue with the same format, but depending on the progress of the build, they may slightly deviate from this format. At the beginning from the episode, McCloud meets with the clients embarking on the project. See the site with them, and discussing the plans for the building. Accompanying this a computer visualisation or CAD view from the intended project is shown. Ground work commences in the next stage, McCloud visits the site periodically, following the build progress, any changes, hitches or delays. The builds frequently run over budget. McCloud will often do a piece to camera concentrating on any unique materials or features in the house. McCloud visits again if the building is then made watertight, and the first and second fixes have commenced. Finally, McCloud visits the site in its finished or near-finished state, once the occupants have moved in. A tour with the house is then given; Kevin brings the episode to a close summarising the house, its construction, and his opinions.
If a house is unlikely to be completed before filming finishes, it will often be revisited in a later episode. A twist may be added in the current series in that McCloud revisits old, unfinished builds once they have been completed and stays with the family for a night.
The properties featured in the series vary in style and design from underground homes to converted water towers, the only common factor being that they are all rather unusual or extravagant in some way. One project from the series was Ben Law's woodsman's cottage which was built largely with wood harvested from the surrounding woodland, using few commercial materials and predominantly free labour.
